INTERVIEW WITH Tommy Tordsson Björk, NARRATIVE DESIGNER, MachineGames

GameStop:
In The New Colossus Blazkowicz wakes up on a U-boat which reminds us of the classic movie ‘Das Boot’, will we get to fight there? Can we expect any other interesting locations to feature in the game?

Tommy Tordsson Björk:
Actually, the entire first level takes place on the U-boat, with B.J., who is so wounded from what transpired at the end of The New Order, fighting Nazis while moving around in a wheelchair. I think it’s an amazing and fitting introduction to the game that will take you to many varied and unique locations. So far we’ve shown you Roswell, New Mexico where B.J. has to deliver a nuke to an undercover resistance member, and New Orleans, a walled-in ghetto where fragments of the American resistance are under siege. But there will be many other places to explore too.

GS:
Please can you tell us more about the story?

TTB:
The game starts off immediately where we left off in The New Order. B.J. is a broken man after the showdown with General Deathshead. After spending five months in a coma on the stolen Nazi U-boat Evas Hammer, he wakes up to a full-blown Nazi invasion. The resistance is trying to rally the remnants of the rebellion in America to ignite a revolution. Meanwhile, Frau Engel, who has been promoted to General after her encounter with B.J. in The New Order, has been hunting the resistance and specifically B.J. who she wants to destroy above all else and now she’s found him. So, you could say that B.J. has a quite the fight on his hands.

GS:
Will the game feature as much stealth as ‘The New Order’ or will it be a more aggressive experience?

TTB:
The New Colossus caters to a wider variety of shooter play styles. In this game we’ve divided them up into three categories: mayhem, tactical and stealth. So there will be weapon upgrades, perks and special contraptions you can use to assist these different styles and you can choose to engage combat scenarios whichever way you want. You may approach a scenario stealthily taking down the first few soldiers, then whip out your two Shockhammer shotguns and just blast your way through the opposition. We believe in player freedom and have polished and fine-tuned the game to this end.

GS:
You can now dual wield with a different weapon in each hand which we love the sound of! Are you always thinking about how you can crank up the gameplay elements in each new game? Is there anything else nice that you’ve added?

TTB:
We always want to spice things up and iterate upon the ferocious gameplay foundation that we laid out with the first game. I think it’s important to give each game a distinct flavour and personality while remaining true to the spirit of the series. Another cool thing I think you’d like are the three contraptions: the Battle Walker which are these deployable stilts that make you taller and give you a birds eye view of the battle ground and let you reach higher ground; the Ramshackles – reinforced armour which allows you smash through doors and walls, as well as pulverize Nazis; and the Constrictor Harness with which you can creep through impossibly thin pipes and narrow gaps and reach otherwise inaccessible areas.

GS:
We have to ask about the Nazi superhero Blitzmensch! Do you think this combination of pop culture and propaganda could be a hit with fans, especially when promoting the game?

TTB:
The TV shows like Blitzmensch and Liesel were created to show the kind of subversion of the classic American pop culture of the sixties that the Nazis have been using to indoctrinate the Americans under their rule. I think the fusion of 60’s pop culture and oppressive propaganda is one of the things that make the world of Wolfenstein so unique and interesting because while it’s superficially not that far from how ads and shows actually were during the 60’s, underneath all the smiles and happy faces lies this horrifying machinery of thought manipulation and subjugation that makes it all really terrifying.

GS:
What do you think fans will enjoy most about the new title?

TTB:
The New Colossus is just such a wild and ferocious roller-coaster of an adventure and I think people will love the story and colourful characters just as much as the super intense and brutal combat. The freedom to choose whatever play style suits you in levels that are even bigger and more open than in The New Order, full of secrets and alternate paths. And of course, it’s always incredibly satisfying to shoot Nazis – even more so when you can vaporize them with a high-powered laser beam!
