Razer Sharp Gaming Accessories for 2017

Razer is a name that needs no introduction. They’ve been providing hardcore PC gamers with awesome peripherals and accessories for over 10 years. They’re known as an industry leader in creating high quality performance driven products for gamers, and a raft of these new products are now arriving onto shelves for 2017. Their aim? To give both competitive and casual players an extra edge in all the latest games.

We’ve gone hands on with the new Kraken 7.1 v2 headset and Chroma Ornata keyboard. We’ll also take a look at the wider range of products available, including the exciting Raiju controller for PlayStation 4, which is set to rival the Xbox One Elite Controller from Microsoft.

Razer Kraken 7.1 v2 Headset

This headset is a fantastic choice if you’re a PC gamer who wants to get up and running with minimum fuss. It’s a USB headset which means you plug it into your PC and you’re almost all set. You can install the Razer Synapse software which will give you advanced customisation options and allows you to enable the 7.1 features.

Other key advantages of this headset in my view are its light weight and comfort. It feels great in your hand due to a metal housing around the ear cups but still feels like you’re holding something lightweight.

Sound quality is also excellent and the virtual 7.1 surround sound will definitely help you out in some sticky situations. We found this useful when playing a few hours of Battlefield 1. For listening to music the sound stage is quite narrow but still very enjoyable. Everything is punchy and it offers a strong presence. As with most gaming headsets the bass is quite strong – but not overly so.

The microphone is another star of the show. The construction is fantastic. It retracts back inside the headset when it isn’t in use and it doesn’t move or slip when in position – rock solid. There’s also a hidden button on the microphone which mutes it and a built in LED which illuminates when it’s muted. This was all very well thought out and designed by Razer.

The Chroma options for controlling the colours are a little limited in comparison with the presets offered on the keyboard. You can still match the two up which looks great. I also found the braided USB cord which is part of the left ear cup can cause some noise inside when it rubs against your clothing. This was the only real issue I experienced. It would also be nice if there was a 3.5mm jack for connecting the headset to other devices, but I can understand why USB was chosen due to the need for power and software compatibility.

It’s an extremely well rounded headset aimed squarely at PC gamers. I was really pleased with the audio quality overall. The Razer software is accessible and allows you to customise everything to your liking, making this a great choice as long as you’re on a PC or Mac. I can see a lot of PC gamers choosing it over some of the competition.

Verdict: 8/10

Razer Ornata Chroma Keyboard

The Razer Ornata Chroma keyboard is one for the gamer that wants to go all out.

It’s a great example of Razer’s Chroma technology. You can display nearly any colour as a backlight behind your keys. It provides multicolour options (16.8 million in total!) that will turn heads but also more understated presets such as a solid solo colour. My favourite was the ‘fire’ setting which displays a smouldering backdrop of orange and yellow behind your keys, perfect for lighting up enemies with my flamethrower!

There’s also a clever feature which will allow 3rd party applications to control the lights on the keyboard. While playing Overwatch for example the colour will change to match the character you’ve chosen – neat! Your special and ultimate keys will also light up when an action is ready.

The keys themselves are mid-sized, not too tall but have quite a bit of travel. Razer calls the technology “Mecha-Membrane", a solution which “combines the soft cushioned touch of a membrane rubber dome with the crisp tactile click of a mechanical switch to enable swift actuation for each key stroke". They felt good to use and were well spaced out. It’s a full size keyboard so you get your number pad too.

My favourite part of the package is the wrist rest that Razer has included. It’s the embodiment of the word premium – a really soft, comfortable surface which should allow you to game comfortably for hours. I was also glad it’s included because the keyboard is quite tall when stood on it’s legs. This will take up quite a bit of space on a small desk but it’s well worth it.

Overall the keyboard doesn’t doesn’t do a huge amount different other than the lighting, but if you’re in the market for a rock solid gaming keyboard then look no further than the Ornata Chroma.

Verdict: 7/10
